About Vector Photonics

Vector Photonics produces PCSEL-based, III-V semiconductor lasers – the most significant innovation in laser design and manufacture for 30 years. The company is a spin-out company from the University of Glasgow; one of the UK and world’s Optical and Photonics centres of excellence. It has received a £1.6m equity investment, alongside government funding, taking its total seed funding to over £4m.

PCSELs (Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers) are low cost, robust, have a broad wavelength range and high power – a unique combination of key characteristics which gives them a huge advantage over all other semiconductor laser technologies used today. PCSELs are made in a similar way to EELs (Edge Emitting Lasers), allowing established supply chains to be utilised in their manufacture. They also emit light from their top surface, making them easy to package and incorporate into PCBs and electronic assemblies for the many domestic and industrial applications they benefit.

Senior Engineer

Location: Glasgow

Job Role

As a senior engineer you will work alongside and in conjunction with the CTO and Director of product development to design and simulate semiconductor lasers, the fabrication of these device will be outsourced, and the team will teas and analyses the devices, comparing results against international standards and modifying designs accordingly.

The job requires expert knowledge in design, development and testing of III-V semiconductor optical sources (e.g. lasers, diodes, optical amplifiers, etc) and/or hybrid integration of semiconductor devices.

Perform the following activities:

  • Plan and conduct assigned R&D work individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and department research strategy.
  • Contribute to the acquisition, set up, maintenance and integration of experimental apparatus or computational kit, and in setting up theoretical models and analysis strategies.
  • Contribute to the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from external bodies to support future research.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team/group meetings.
  • Be responsible for safety management related to the organisation and running of Laboratory and/or Experimental techniques, equipment and processes as appropriate.
  • Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
  • Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by your line manager.

These key tasks are not intended to be exhaustive but simply highlight a number of major tasks which the staff member may be reasonably expected to perform.

Knowledge/Qualifications/Skills

  • Honours degree in a STEM subject or a cognate discipline, or equivalent.
  • Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of semiconductor laser design fabrication, test and analysis
  • A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the wider subject area or subject specialism
  • Knowledge of specialist IT software (eg. Matlab, LabView, C, RSoft etc.) as appropriate
  • Ability to design build and optimise automated laboratory test and measurement apparatus.
  • Be able to choose and implement appropriate testing methods of optoelectronic devices
  • Experience of III-V semiconductor optical device development
  • Self motivation, initiative and independent thought/working
  • Problem solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approach
  • Hold or be working towards CEng or equivalent – candidates not holding a Chartership will be expected to work towards it and will be allocated time to do so

Senior Process Engineer

Job Role

As a senior engineer you will work alongside and in conjunction with the CTO and Director of product development to design, develop processes for semiconductor lasers, the fabrication of these device will be outsourced for volume , and the team will test and analys the devices, comparing results against international standards and modifying designs accordingly.

The job requires expert knowledge in design of processes in III-V materials, preferably III-V semiconductor optical sources (e.g. lasers, diodes, optical amplifiers, etc) and/or hybrid integration of semiconductor devices. The modelling, development and testing of III-V semiconductor optical sources would be advantageous.

Perform the following activities:

  • Plan and conduct assigned R&D work individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and department research strategy.
  • Contribute to the acquisition, set up, maintenance and integration of experimental apparatus or computational kit, and in setting up theoretical models and analysis strategies.
  • Contribute to the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from external bodies to support future research.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team/group meetings. Mentor and support junior staff and provide written high quality procedural instruction to internal and external collaborators.
  • Be responsible for safety management related to the organisation and running of Laboratory and/or Experimental techniques, equipment and processes as appropriate.
  • Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
  • Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by your line manager.

Principal Engineer

  • Initiate and create development projects for consideration of the senior management team in line with the technology and product roadmaps. Leading in commercial and government supported projects.
  • Provide leadership in technical team in relation to specified area of expertise through mentoring and coaching and produce internationally recognised publications and presentations.
  • Plan and conduct assigned R&D work individually or jointly, both internally and in conjunction with customer and academic partners in accordance with the project deliverables and department research strategy.
  • Contribute to the acquisition, set up, maintenance and integration of experimental apparatus or computational kit, and in setting up theoretical models and analysis strategies.
  • Contribute to the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from external bodies to support future research.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team/group meetings.
  • Provide challenging input to the continued development of the product and technology roadmaps.
  • Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as required in a start-up environment.
